Network Routing ? Navigating The Network Traffic!

When we are transferring any data from one device to another, that data has to travel through the routers before it reaches the destination device. Routing is a procedure where selection of routes for data transfer in any given network is done. It is used by many networks like telecommunications network and Internet or the electronic network. The network routing means the transition or transfer of the data packets from the source to the destination by using the connecting points such as the routers. Individual home users commonly use the IP router. The broadband routers connect the local area network to the wide area network. The routing tables which can be considered as a record of various routes to many destinations in the network. These routing tables allow the routers to sort the network traffic depending on the source and destination addresses.

While transferring the data from one computer to another, the routing tables will send the packets to the IP address of the destination point. That data packet will reach a router which will decide whether the packet will reach directly the destination or through another router. This procedure will continue till the data packet reaches the destination.

It is very important in Network Routing that the routing tables are able to use more than one route or path so as to ensure that the data transfer is efficiently completed. It is a system which ensures the route of transfer, the capacity or sped of transfer per single unit of time etc. For efficient data transfer there are few concepts which are very important.

The routers should have adequate buffer space for temporary storage, enough bandwidth, and perfect transfer of data and efficiency of the router itself for forwarding the data to the necessary link. The routing tables store the possible routes which will work best for the transfer of data. Using routing protocols like MPLS results in effective and efficient transfer of data. The routing algorithms help the routers to select the best route to send the data packet so that it will reach the destination in shortest possible time.
